2012 Region XV Golf Tournament Results

Lewis tied in second

May 12, 2012 - Rockland's Colby Lewis shot a 79 in the second round but it wasn't enough as Suffolk's Andrew Owad won medalist honors for the 2012 Region XV Golf Championship Tournament at Philip Rotella Golf Course in Thiells, New York.

Nassau won the tournament finishing the tournament with a total of 655. Rockland finished third with a team total of 689, Dutchess, Westchester, Ulster and Orange round out the team standing.

Lewis is joined on the All-Region Team by Westchester's Anthony Siguil, Dutchess' Rob McCutchen and Orange's Scott McWatters. Lewis, Siguil, and McWatters also qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament.

Lewis voted MVP second year in a row

April 07, 2012 - Rockland's Colby Lewis was voted the Most Valuable Player for the second year in the row by the Mid Hudson Conference coaches. Lewis led the Hawks in finishing on top of the Mid Hudson Conference standings as well as finishing at the top of the Players Standings for the 2012 season.

The First Team All Conference is composed of: Rob McCutcheon (Dutchess), Daniel Gizzi (Rockland), Sal LaRocca (Dutchess), Scott McWatters (Orange), Terrance Michalek (Rockland), Chris Moruzzi (Ulster), Michael Cavanaugh (Rockland), Oliver Pulver (Ulster), Sean Tucker (Dutchess), and Anthony Siguil (Westchester).


Rockland to host 2012 Region XV Golf Tournament

Tournament at Philip J. Rotella Memorial Golf Course

April 24, 2012 - The 2012 Region XV Golf Tournament will begin on Wednesday May 9, with a practice round at 1pm. The coaches meeting will be later that night at 6pm. Action gets underway on May 10, with an opening ceremony at 10:45am, and the first group teeing off at 11am. A banquet will take place after the first round at the Sonoma Grill at the course. The final round will begin at 8am on Friday May 11, and an awards ceremony will officially close out the event adjacent to the 18th green as soon as the last group finishes.

All the events and the tournament will once again be held at the Philip J. Rotella Memorial Golf Course in Thiells, New York. For the third straight year, the golf tournament committee and host Rockland Community College appreciates the help of the Town of Haverstraw, Cal Fowx, Mike Laudien, and the Sonoma Grill. We are looking forward to another exciting tournament.


Hawks finished first in Dunwoodie

Team finished 327, 42 lower than second place UCCC

April 13, 2012 - Rockland finished first during the second leg of Mid Hudson Conference Golf Tournament at Dunwoodie Golf Course. The team shot a 327 while second place Ulster shot a 369. Westchester came in third with 371 and Orange rounded out the team category with 413.

For individual, Dutchess' Rob McCutcheon and Rockland's Daniel Gizzi finished on top of the standings with both golfers shooting a 74, 4 over par. Rockland's Colby Lewis shot a 76, Dutchess' Sal LaRocca shot a 79 and Rockland's Terrence Michalek and Orange's Scott McWatters shot a 85 to round off the top finishers.

The third leg of the Mid Hudson Conference Golf Tournment will be at Wiltwyck Golf Course on Monday, April 16. Ulster County Community College is the host of the tournament.


Hawks finished second in Suffolk Tournament

April 3, 2012 - Rockland finished second during the tournament hosted by Suffolk County Community College at St. George Golf Course in East Setauket, New York. The team shot 322, just five behind tournament winner Nassau.

Rockland will now host the first leg of the Conference Tournament on Monday, April 9 at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, NY. Tee time is scheduled at 1:00 pm.


Rockland Announces 2012 Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

Dec. 21, 2011 - The Rockland Community College Athletic Department is pleased to announce the 2012 class of Sports Hall of Fame Inductees. Festivities will commence on January 21, 2012 at 7pm at the Italian-American Social Club in West Haverstraw.

The admission price of $50 includes hors d’ouvers, cocktails, salad, pasta, prime rib, coffee, dessert and dancing. For reservations or more information please call the RCC Athletic Office at (845) 574-4452 or 4512.

Five individuals make up the fifth annual class and will join the already 25 members Included. They are:

Joseph Romano ’64, Wrestling & Soccer Joe Romano was a force on the wrestling mat for RCC when the program was still in its infancy. In 1962 he advanced through the Regional Tournament and finished second. He finished third in 1963. He was a two-year team captain on the wrestling squad and was the soccer team captain in 1963. After serving the nation in the United States Navy, Romano came back to Rockland and took a teaching position at the Clarkstown Central School District in 1971. Two years later, he began an illustrious teaching and coaching career at Goshen High School. When he retired from coaching in 1985, his Gladiator teams had won several championships. His 1980 and 1984 teams reached the New York State Tournament with the 1980 team reaching the semi-finals. He compiled an amazing 110-10-2 coaching record, which resulted in the Goshen School District renaming its soccer field in Romano’s honor in 2010.

Tom McNamara ’85, Baseball Tom McNamara played baseball for the Hawks and was a 1985 All-Mid Hudson Conference selection. He then attended Dominican College where he helped the Chargers to NAIA District titles in 1986, 1987 and 1988. In 1988 he was an NAIA All-American. McNamara was signed by the Seattle Mariners and played one season for the Bellingham Mariners. He was also inducted into the Dominican College Sports Hall of Fame as a member of their first class. Following his playing career, McNamara continued his involvement with the game by joining the Hawks coaching staff. Working under head coach Dan Keeley, McNamara helped guide the Hawks to the 1993 NJCAA World Series. He left RCC after three seasons to take a position with the Seattle Mariners. He worked as an area scout for the Northeast region from 1994-2000. After spending two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and five years with the San Diego Padres organizations, he returned to Seattle and is now the Director of Amateur Scouting for the Mariners.

Lucia Lopez-Patterson ’87, Soccer & Softball Lucia Lopez-Patterson was two-sport standout at Rockland Community College from 1985 to 1987. In her freshman year on the softball diamond, she led the NJCAA in batting with a .627 average and a .966 slugging percentage. She collected 32 RBI and had four home runs that same year. Lopez-Patterson was also a catalyst on the women’s soccer team for two seasons.

Jack Watson ’90, Golf Jack Watson is currently a Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology and Chair of the Department for Sport Sciences at West Virginia University. Before attending the University of Virginia, and competing on the UVA golf team, Jack attended Rockland Community College from 1988-1990. He excelled on the RCC Golf team and qualified for the NJCAA National Championship twice, finishing second in 1990. In 1990, he was named an NJCAA All-American. Also in the same year, the Hawks finished the season ranked third in the final NJCAA polls.

Kurt A. Palmer ’96, Soccer Palmer was a member of the 1993 men’s soccer team that won the Region XV Championship and advanced to the NJCAA Tournament. The 1993 season ended with the nationally ranked (No. 8) Hawks boasting an 18-1-0 record. Palmer capped his two-year Rockland career by garnering a spot on the All-Mid Hudson Conference First Team and the All-Region XV Second Team. After graduation, Palmer attended St. John’s University and played two seasons of varsity soccer. Most notably, he was a member of the Red Storm’s 1996 team which captured the NCAA National Championship. He is now the Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at Adelphi University after spending seven years as an assistant coach at St. Francis College in Brooklyn.

Also at the dinner, the Athletic Department will also present the Dr. Cliff L. Wood Service Award. The award, now in its second year, is presented to an RCC graduate who exemplifies outstanding community service.

Since 1960, SUNY Rockland Athletics has produced 51 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Americans and more than 50 former student-athletes have become coaches after their playing careers.


Former Hawks selected to Rockland Boulders

New team part of CanAm League

May 20, 2011 - Pitcher Justin Ottman and Shortstop Arturo Ledesma were among the six players selected during a tryout held by the newly formed Rockland Boulders of the CanAm League.

A left-handed pitcher, Justin Ottman pitched for the Hawks during the 2001-2002 season and holds a 9-1 record with a 1.75 ERA. He continued his collegiate career with Oklahoma State University. Over that time, he compiled a 22-7 record on the mound with an ERA of just over 3.00. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2000 during MLB's First Year Player Draft after graduating from North Rockland High School. He was then drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 19th round of the 2001 Draft but chose to play for Oklahoma State University in the Big 12 Conference. His professional career started in 2005 while playing for the San Diego Surf Dawgs in the Golden League to which they won the Golden Baseball League Championship. He then move to the Charlotte County Redfish of the South Coast League in 2007.

Arturo Ledesma was a standout shortstop for the Hawks during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 season. During his two year stint as a Hawk, Ledesma compiled 85 Hits, 59 RBIs, 32 Steals in 61 games played with a batting average of .384 to which he was voted as the 2007 Region XV Division II Player of the Year and was included in the All Region First Team. He then went on to play for Baruch College.

2011 Region XV Golf Champions - Rockland Community College

May 13, 2011 - A four-stroke margin was good enough for Rockland Community College to overtake Nassau Community College to win the Region XV Golf Championship Friday afternoon at the Philip J. Rotella Golf Course in Haverstraw. Rockland scored a 665 and Nassau netted a 669 total score for the two day event. Suffolk placed third with a 680, Orange took fourth with 732, while Ulster and Dutchess rounded the field with a 735 and 747 respectively.

Rockland's Colby Lewis was the tournament's medalist with a 153 total score. Although the Monroe-Woodbury graduate fired a final round score of 77, (five over-par) he narrowly missed the day's best score of 74, which was completed by Ulster's Kyle Nissen. Rockland golfers along with Nissen, Suffolk's Jeff Nagel (76-160), Dutchess' Mike Dinnelli (85-166), Orange's Scott McWatters (84-167), and Suffolk's Mike Powers (84-171) have qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament in Chautauqua, New York. The National Tournament will take place at the Chautauqua Golf Club and will be held June 6-10.

Rockland holds 8-Stroke lead after first round

Teammate Colby Lewis and Dan Gizzi tied for second

May 12, 2011 - Rockland Community College holds an 8-stroke lead over Nassau as all the teams headed into the clubhouse after the first round of the 2011 Region XV Golf Championship at the Philip J. Rotella Golf Course in Haverstraw. After Thursday's round, four Rockland golfers tallied 324 while Nassau fired a total of 332. Suffolk sits in third place with a 341 and Orange collected a score of 362, which is good enough for fourth place.

Nassau's Corey Huberty is the tournament's leader after a 3-over par 75. Monroe Woodbury graduate Colby Lewis is tied with Rockland teammate Dan Gizzi after an opening round score of 76. Gizzi, a North Rockland graduate, completed a career-best round.

Tournament continues tomorrow, May 13 at tee time scheduled at 8:30 am.

Conference Team Announced

Colby Lewis voted Most Valuable Player

May 9, 2011 - Rockland's Colby Lewis was voted at the Most Valuable Player of the 2010-2011 Men's Golf Season. Lewis led the Hawks during the season finishing the regular season on top of the standings. Lewis dominated the regular season finishing first in all but one of the regular season meet.

The First Team All Conference is composed of: Scott McWatters (Orange), Kyle Nissen (Ulster), John Borean (Rockland), Mike Dinelli (Dutchess), Will Finnerty (Dutchess), Craig Zamolkany (Rockland), Scott Abkarian (Orange), Sean Tucker (Dutchess), Justin Alles (Ulster), Anthony Siguil (Westchester) and Terrance Michalak (Rockland).


Rockland set to host Region XV Golf Championship

Tournament will be held at Rotella Memorial Golf Course

April 27, 2011 - Plans are being finalized for the 2011 Region XV Golf Championship Tournament to return to the Town of Haverstraw and the Phillip J. Rotella Memorial Golf Course. Under the direction of Town of Haverstraw Supervisor Howard T. Phillips, Jr., and golf course management, Rotella Memorial played host to last year's tournament. Nassau Community College won the 2010 championship and eventually finished fourth in final NJCAA Division III National Golf Team polls.

The three-day event will begin with a practice round on Wednesday May 11. First round play starts at 11:00am on Thursday May 12, with the second round teeing off at 8:30am on Friday May 13. The winning team and medalist will earn a trip to the NJCAA Division III National Golf Championships,(June 6-10) at the Chautauqua Golf Course in Chautauqua, New York.

Rockland maintains first-place MHC standing

McWatters snapped Lewis' four-match medalist streak

Apr 25, 2011 - Orange's Scott McWatters bested Rockland's Colby Lewis to earn medalist honors at the Mid Hudson Conference match Monday afternoon at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern. McWatters fired a one-under par 71, while Lewis netted a 74. McWatters' triumph snapped Lewis' four-match medalist streak. Lewis, a Monroe-Woodbury graduate, still holds a Conference best total of 306 after four tournaments. McWatters stands at 325.

Rockland maintained its first-place MHC standing by winning the event and collecting a team score of 319. Albertus Magnus graduate, Terrance Michalak finished with an 80, and teammate John Borean posted an 81. Dan Gizzi, who continues to improve, shot a season-best 84 for the Hawks. Ulster finished second with a team score of 348.

Howard Pierson to be inducted to RCC Sports Hall of Fame

Four others included in Class of 2011

Jan 19, 2011 - Legendary RCC coach Howard Pierson will be inducted along with Coach Bob Nadal, Golfer Steven Torsoe, Wrestler Richard Johnston and Soccer player John Tirino in this year's Rockland Community College Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2011.

Coach Pierson or "Pro" as he was known landed back in Rockland County in 1960 after a brief professional career with the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1965, he began his long career as a coach and later as Athletic Director. In the late 70s, he traded his whistle for a golf club and coach the golf team to 21 Mid-Hudson Conference Championships and participated in numerous NJCAA National Tournaments.

As an African-American athlete, Howie has amassed numerous awards and honors including being the first black high school coach in Rockland, the first black athletic director of a New York State Junior College, the first black baseball captain at Manhattan, and the first black to play in the U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament.

The induction ceremony and dinner will take place on January 22, 2011 at the Italian American Social Club in West Haverstraw, NY starting at 7pm. The admission price of $50 includes a cocktail hour, salad, pasta, prime rib dinner, music, dancing and an open bar.
